When the Man waked up he said, "What is Wild Dog doing here?" And the Woman said, "His name is not Wild Dog anymore, but the First Friend, because he will be our friend for always and always and always. Take him with you when you go hunting."

if blood is not tested right away and sits around for a while (can be only 10 minutes on that little strip they put it on), the blood sugar comes out higher than it actually is. Some people are not aware of this and will actually think the result was high.
I happen to figure this out a few years back because our patient population has every 1 hour blood sugar checks because they are on insuling drips. With that many checks, one of the results I had was unusually high, took it again, it was in normal range. Then I experimented with it again and it did the same thing.
Just something to ponder.
No healthcare worker intentionally goes into work thinking "i'm going to screw up today and harm someone". It was an accident I'm sure and all I can say is that we all need to be advocates in our own health care...ask questions if something doesn't seem right or question them, or ask for second opinions. _________________ You can never eat too much candy... |

The strip tests I ran each morning, the strip was in the monitor and gave an immediate readout. And it was the contradictive test results that 'caused me to question them and 'caused my dr. to go for a repeat glucose tolerance test. He agreed with me especially after the A1C of 5.3%......it just didn't compute! _________________ John Richardson and Richie Rich, El Perro de Playero

I spent four years as an Air Force medic and I was one of the few lucky ones that went through the Navy's six month Corpman School in San Diego rather than the Air Force's 12 week school in Texas. Even with the more extensive training, once I was assigned to Hamilton AFB Hospital, nobody let me do anything for the first time, be it draw blood, start an IV or suture a minor wound, without someone looking over my shoulder to make sure I knew what I was doing. Everything I did for the first time I did under some one's direct supervision.
It was the first day on the job for the lab tech that did the first glucose tolerance test and NOBODY checked to see if she was doing it correctly....at least not while I was there and I had to stay there for the full two hours.
The more I think about it, the more PO'd I get because I had family and friends worried needlessly for over six months due to the lab's ineptitude and I'm going to encourage my Dr. to raise a little hell with Labcor. Ironic that Monday morning on the way to the lab I listened to a radio commercial for Labcor telling people to tell their Dr. to insist on the best, labcor! _________________ John Richardson and Richie Rich, El Perro de Playero

Unfortunately healthcare workers are in great need, especially in AZ from what I hear. There is too much work for the staff that is present and so we have issues where a new lab tech tests Hoomer's blood on their first day on the job and bungles it. There was probably not enough supervision at the lab to provide supervision to check on such matters. Human error will always be an issue, especially in an understaffed environment.
Hooli, call GWB and tell him you're up for some W**K and want to be the new Healthcare Czar for America and get this straightened out. Fix that issue I'm going to have in a few years with my Social Security while you're at it too.

Gawd, Hooligan. You're supposed to FAST for the 12 hours. Total abstinence from intake.
Bloody Marys, Bloody Marias, Martinis, and BonBons to excess during the fasting ARE ALSO INCLUDED.
Is anyone seriously surprised that the test went awry? I didn't think so.
