Wildfire spokeman Jim Paxon retires, goes on honeymoon
The Arizona Republic
Jan. 8, 2003 08:10 PM
The most famous mouthpiece of recent years in the U.S. Forest Service is no longer a mouthpiece.
Jim Paxon, the face and voice behind last summer's Rodeo-Chediski fire, retired on Jan. 3 after 33 years. But it doesn't mean he's staying silent.
On Wednesday night, he was speaking before the Sonoran Speakers Club. Among the 150 at his speech at Grayhawk Golf Club were dozens of residents of Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside, folks who wanted to thank Paxon for keeping them informed.
Pointing to a photo of firefighters, he said "They're the heroes. All I did was tell you about it (the fire)."
Paxon, a Texas native who lives in Truth or Consequences, N.M., called the Rodeo-Chediski "the biggest, fastest, most aggressive, most climactic, awesome fire I've ever seen."
The Rodeo-Chediski burned 468,000 acres and 460 homes.
Paxon plans to spend some quality time with his new wife, Debbie, whom he married weeks before the fire began. Their honeymoon was delayed until Halloween, when they went to spend time with the witches of Salem, Mass.
The 54-year-old Paxon is still young enough to start a new career.
maybe we need a Flora/Fauna/Mother Nature section? _________________ -Colin

I always liked him. He was to the point, as he was about the heroes statement. I'd probably vote for him for governor or some other such thing.
Yep we need a forum for Flora/Fauna etc.
Workin' on it.
