Our brain is hard wired in such a way as to recognise potential matches to familiar objects, this is how optical illusions work......
But did yiu konw taht aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe.
Weird eh? |

When the Man waked up he said, "What is Wild Dog doing here?" And the Woman said, "His name is not Wild Dog anymore, but the First Friend, because he will be our friend for always and always and always. Take him with you when you go hunting."

That is so cool! I had no problem reading that (which may speak volumes for me ). If we don't read the whole word, I wonder why it is that we always seem to catch someone else's misspelling? |

Actually - that research only applies to high level readers. If you only have a rudimentary reading level then you would NOT be able to read that paragraph. The trick is actually that over 50% of the words we speak and read are what we call "Structure" words (what, that, the, an, but, etc.). They don't have much meaning on their own, but are used to put context around lexical words that do have meaning.
They are correct about the context of words being coded as whole units, however that is all based on an understanding of words and having a vocabulary large enough to encompass the words that are not spelled properly.
Try and have a 1st grader read that paragraph - they wouldn't be able to do it. I would like to read the whole report some time, but my guess is that you would need to be at a 5th or 6th grade reading level to be able to decode that paragraph.
So Hooli probably had some difficulty. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

Well yea, you need to know what the words are...someone who couldn't read the paragraph written correctly wouldn't be able to read the paragraph with the misspellings...cognatively it's not possible. If the person has the site words in their rote memory they can read that paragraph with the errors.
Now, a 1st grader couldn't read it b/c at that level it's all phonics, but a third grader could get through it, especially if they've been exposed to the words previously of if they've been taught with a whole langauge approach. _________________ -Colin
