I'm planning to hike Escudilla in early Oct and have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help with. Randy I read your awesome report on HAZ btw, very fun read, thank you for sharing it.
1. If I take the route to Payson then 260 East from Phx about how long is the drive to the TH?
2. is there a shorter route form Phx?
3. I heard hwy 191 is a really slow and not so fun road, is this true?
Thank you in advance _________________ Jamie

I was forced to take #3 instead of #1 due to fires ...
On #3 Hwy 191 -- Its cool but awfully slow! Aviod if you can
I was there following Randy's direction -- excellent indeed! _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

From the Valley take 87 to Payson, then 260 to Show Low. The Fast route from here is 60 to Springerville/Eager; but the scenic route is 260, which goes thru McNary, and past Sunrise and Greer. It is longer, steeper and slower but much prettier. Compromise my taking one each way. Take 191 south thru Nutrioso and look for the turnoff for Escudilla/Terry Flats. 191 is a awesomely beautiful drive yo Safford, but it is very slow-you will average about 35-40 mph. This is a must do drive, however.
The hike up Escudilla is great in the fall when the aspen leaves are golden. -R |

On the subject of Hwy 191: it is an excellent road in a sports car or motorcycle. A group us did a weekend trip up there just to drive this road. One man's heaven is... |

Oh yeah, I forgot.....drive time from Fountain Hills is about 4.5 hours via US 60 north route, maybe an hour longer going via 260 thru Pinetop and McNary. |
